HOW TO PREPARE BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT
Most curly girls have been told that moisture is essential for their hair so they slather it with heavy oils and butters. It seems like it should work, but it usually ends up sitting on the outside of the hair, while the hair cuticle remains dry and unhealthy underneath and the hair frizzes or becomes stringy.
Joy's philosophy is based on the water-soluble moisturizer, pioneered by Lorraine Massey. This idea is based on water being the most important moisturizer for curly or wavy hair, and avoids use of such things like parabens and sulfates. Almost all curly girl products are filled with these ingredients, or oils, and do not work with the water-soluble way of understanding hair.
The success of your first cut with Joyfully Curly® depends on prepping for the first cut, so it's important to follow the steps below.

IMPORTANT STEPS BEFORE COMING
- Start with a baking soda cleanse, found on our FAQ page. It's simple and removes build up on hair left by non-water soluble products.
- Please discontinue use of any shea moisturizing products. These types of heavy oils build up and tend to sit on top of the hair cuticle, making a curly cut difficult. We recommend purchasing this sample hair kit** from Deva Curl, or these products by CurlyWorld™, or anything that is proven to be water soluble.
- Use the products for 2-3 weeks to get your hair adjusted (if using Deva make sure to order the Original green label). These can be tough weeks as your hair learns a new curve, but hang in there! This is a great place to get started learning about the 3-step curly girl method.

ON THE MORNING OF THE APPOINTMENT
This one is pretty simple. Your hair can be fresh washed, or washed a day or two before.
The most important thing to remember is not to use any clips or ties in your hair since the last washing, and to avoid using hair irons of any kind. Joy will need to see the natural shape of your hair.
Joy will then guide you through the initial consultation, and cut and sculpt each curl before cleansing, styling, and drying your hair. After drying, your new cut will be examined for any adjustments, and Joy will also cover product knowledge and tips for caring and maintaining your curls. Now is a great time to ask Joy any questions, basic or advanced.
All done! Most clients report that it is the first time they left a salon and didn't have to wash and restyle their curls.
A Joyfully Curly® cut can replace 2-4 traditional haircuts, depending on the preferred length of your style.
